Ivy Muse is a botanical wares studio based in Melbourne who design beautiful, functional plant stands and botanical wares that encourage plant lovers to get creative with their greenery.
Alana Langan and Jacqui Vidal are the co-founders of Ivy Muse, a botanical wares business selling elegant and functional plant stands and accessories. Langan and Vidal have been personal friends for over ten years, and have teamed up to design all their products in their Melbourne studio. “We met through a ‘friend of a friend’ and hit it off and stayed close even with both of us having stints living overseas during that time” says Langan. Vidals says it was common interests that brought their business to fruition; “We were both keen on the idea of getting creative with bringing greenery indoors”.
Both Langan and Vidal balance their time between Ivy Muse, their children, and their other businesses. Langan is the founder and director of Hunt & Bow, an online boutique selling modern and vintage homewares. Formerly a PR consultant, Langan also works as an interior stylist and has styled residential and commercial spaces featured in Inside Out, Real Living and Home Beautiful.
Vidal is the founder and director of Signed & Numbered, selling limited edition artworks by Australian and international artists. Vidal has premises on Greville Street in Prahran, and another on Degraves Street in Melbourne’s CBD.
Ivy Muse was launched in the Spring of 2014 with the Geoscapes collection of four limited edition plant stands. “We were floored by the welcoming response we received from customers and retailers” says Langan, “This phase was an exciting blur to be honest!” Another highlight in the early phase of their work was being featured in the Design Files Open House in 2014.
Since Ivy Muse’s launch they’ve experienced an exponential increase in interest from the public and fellow designers. Since the initial whirlwind, “We’ve since settled into our groove of being a new business and are excited by our upcoming plans” says Langan. Vidal says that her favourite part of their creative process is the early stages. “I’ve always got ideas and designs running through my head! It’s so satisfying to see something grow from a simple drawing through to a complete fully-fledged product”.
For their latest collection, Nightshade, “We’ve drawn inspiration from the simplicity of a winter sunset”, says Vidal, “With a pared-back aesthetic and a focus on intense colour.” To celebrate the follow-up of their inaugural collection last October, Ivy Muse are also selling limited-edition pots handmade by Ingrid Tufts.
For the future, Langan and Vidal plan to release two collections per year, and they’ve currently extending their range with new products, including pots. Langan and Vidal have already begun planning their third collection, which involves a collaboration with a local Australian artist.
Ivy Muse is also on the hunt for Australian stockists who share their philosophy. Their products are already sold by twenty stockists around Australia, and products can also be bought directly from their website.
